Frequently Asked Questions

What safety equipment is required on a canoe?

A non-motorized pleasure craft up to 6 metres requires a number of safety items by law.

Do I have to wear my lifejacket while canoeing?

There is no current law requiring anyone to wear a lifejacket/pfd while canoeing. But common sense should prevail. paddlecanada.ca is in favour of all participants wearing life jackets while canoeing.

If my canoe tips, should I swim away from it?

It is always best to stay with your vessel and signal for help by waving your hand (s) in the air. If you can right your canoe, you may be able to reboard and paddle back to shore. It is wise to remain close to shore while canoeing until you gain experience for open water paddling. Cold water can cause hypothermia.

What is the best weight and size of canoe for overnight canoe trips?

The weight and size of your canoe depends on the number of people taking the trip. For two people a 15-foot canoe is sufficient, while for three people a 16 or 17-foot canoe is better. Nobody needs to take a canoe heavier than 55 pounds.

Is there an easy way to stow items for a day trip?

For a day trip, a small pack is all you need. Fill it with a survival kit, a patch kit, a first aid kit, tent style covers to make a shelter if necessary and other items you require. Be sure to have a good rain suit that is light and folds into a small pack (usually through one pocket of the jacket). While cheap is attractive on the pocketbook, cheap rain suits are very heavy, not well ventilated and seams may not be sealed.

What should I do if my canoe is damaged while I am canoeing?

Carry a patch kit that contains Fiberglass cloth, resin and duct tape that can be used to fix any holes in your canoe.

Be safe and happy canoeing! Canoeing
